The 2010 Pumpkin Patch

The pumpkin patch is soaking up the plentiful rain and sunshine. We will have a wide variety of pumpkins perfect for carving, seasonal decor, and baking. Soon it will be time to head out to the apple orchard to find that special pumpkin and pick up a bag of apples for your fall festivities. Bring you cameras. Picnic tables are available. Guess the weight of our prized pumpkin and win both the pumpkin and a gift certificate.

Do you have a Pumpkin Patch photograph you would like to share? Please send it via email maplehillsorchard@hotmail.com and we will add it to our Photo Gallery. We will need written permission from parents to use photos of children. We do not use names in the photo gallery.

Answer: The World Record Pumpkin weighed in at 1,876-pounds and was grown this year by Joe Jutras of Rhode Island.

Trivia Question #2: How did the Peanuts gang made Halloween history?

Answer: Forty years ago tonight (Oct 27), the Peanuts gang make Halloween history with the first broadcast of It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown!

Thank you for a GREAT season! We enjoyed meeting you and hope we filled your pumpkin needs. Hope to see you next year!

After 144 guesses ranging from 20 pounds to 900 pounds on the weight of our largest pumpkin, we had four people with the closest guess.

Rett Martin of St. Paul guessed 146 lbs. as did Brad Wentz of Detroit Lakes. Kathy Caulfield and Bev Pompe of Detroit Lakes guessed 148 lbs. We threw the four names in a basket to determine the winner of the grand pumpkin and the $15 prize.

Kathy donated her pumpkin to the Merit Care Clinic in Detroit Lakes. Many pumpkins went home with customers from Iowa, Arizona, Wisconsin, South Dakota, North Dakota, and of course, Minnesota. Two pumpkins travelled by airplane nearly 2,000 miles. Another pumpkin was donated to St. Thomas Catholic Church in DeSmet, South Dakota for their Thanksgiving decor.

Trivia Question: Who holds the current world record for growing the largest pumpkin?

Answer: Larry Checkon of Northern Cambria, Pennsylvania holds the world record with his pumpkin weighing in at 1,469 pounds. Uffda!
