Fresh from the Orchard

Orchard Journal

January 2009

Happy New Year!   We begin the new year with gathering together the pruning shears and snowshoes.   It's that time of the year, again.   The apple trees are dormant and with our Minnesota winters, pruning during dormancy helps protect the tree as it heals. Our goal in pruning is to open up the canopy of the tree to let in sunlight for good fruit development and disease control.

Pruning was delayed due to subzero temperatures. As soon as the temperatures break, we will be out tramping through the snow with our pruning shears.

Hi Gary, this is Mike and Luke wondering when you are going to start pruning? We were there last fall and you were so gracious to show us around your beautiful orchard. We are the ones from Fergus wanting to start a orchard. We have gathered tons of info and are still excited about our new adventure. We would like to come and help you prune so we can get some on-the-job training. If you would like some help just let us know when your are going to prune and will give our best effort to be there to help. Blessings, Mike Voorhees.
